I did the drawings as I walked the paths of Hakone Gardens, an exquisite Japanese garden completed in 1919 and now open to the public. One drawing every ten steps yielded 57 views of Hakone Gardens, done in willow and vine charcoal to echo the natural feeling of the plantings and buildings. Dry pastels added the occasional touch of color.
